NIMSID Urged FG to Probe contractor over N4.3b Lokoja project..

A social maritime advocacy group known as Nigerian Maritime Student In diaspora (NIMSID) with branches across Europe has called upon the federal government led by President Mohammadu Buhari to set up a probe committee to probe those contractors saddled with the dredging work at lokoja,in Kogi state
The Vice Director of the western branch of the group David Michael Hills, addressing members at world seafarers Day in Skadosk, raise this observation,he added that,it could be recalled that the fmr Managing Director, Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Hajiya Inna Maryam Ciroma, under the previous administration had earlier summoned the contractor handling the dredging of the Lokoja River Port to a meeting to explain why the job has not been completed.More worrisome was the fact that almost two years that she summoned that meeting with the contractors up till date,no drastic action has been taken against those contractors despite the huge amount of money that has gone into the project
The contract for the dredging of the river was awarded at the cost of N4.3billion by the Federal Government and what is on ground does not in any way measure up to the said amount, even the Onitsha port that commerce much latter than the Lokoja port has long been completed, commissioned, and now in use
We are also appealing to the newly appointed NIWA boss to bring to the notice of all relevant authority and also urged the contractor to fast-track the completion of its job to boost NIWA's revenue. Its very regrettably that almost 55 years after independence the north-central does not have a functional port to link up with other states thereby enhance commercial activities
